Visiting the famous cliff dwellings requires planning. You cannot enter sites like Cliff Palace or Balcony House without an official ranger-led tour. Since these sell out quickly, understanding the booking timeline is critical for your visit.

How much does park entry cost?

The National Park Service charges $30 per private vehicle from May 1 to October 22.

From October 23 to April 30, the fee drops to $20 per vehicle. Standard NPS passes, like the America the Beautiful pass, cover this entrance fee. You pay this fee at the gate when you arrive.

When can I book mesa verde tickets and tours?

You must book ranger-led tours 14 days in advance through Recreation.gov.

These tickets are required for almost all cliff dwelling access. Demand is high from May through October. You should log on early exactly 14 days before your planned visit to secure your spots.

Which cliff dwellings require a guided tour?

Cliff Palace, Balcony House, and Long House require pre-booked ranger-led tours.

You cannot enter these sites on your own. Step House is the only cliff dwelling you can visit without a reservation when Wetherill Mesa is open. Spruce Tree House remains closed due to rockfall risk.

Are there commercial mesa verde tickets and tours?

Yes, commercial operators offer half-day and full-day bus tours into the park.

These guided tours often include park entry and a ranger-led cliff dwelling tour in the price. This is a practical option if you want to avoid driving the steep, 21-mile road from the entrance to the main sites.

Are tours available year-round?

No, ranger-led cliff dwelling tours are seasonal and run from May to October.

During the winter months, Wetherill Mesa and all cliff dwelling tours close due to snow and cold temperatures. You can still drive the Mesa Top Loop Road and view the sites from canyon overlooks year-round.

Can I tour the park without a guide?

You can drive the 6-mile Mesa Top Loop Road and view surface sites on your own.

While you cannot enter the main cliff dwellings without a ranger, surface sites and overlooks are open. An audio driving tour is a practical way to learn the 700-year history of the Ancestral Puebloans at your own pace.
